In the event of a fire or fire-related emergency, you and your colleagues will need to rely on your office fire safety equipment to keep your work environment safe. Testing your office fire safety equipment in accordance with Australian Standards is just as crucial a component of your office’s emergency preparedness as your workplace fire and emergency evacuation procedures.

All fire safety equipment come with their own testing requirements as stipulated by the Australian Standards that pertain to those tools and systems. For instance, AS1851 stipulates that all fire sprinkler systems be visually inspected at least once a month and physically tested at least once every 12 months to maintain compliance. Contrastingly, fire extinguishers are required to be inspected every six months. To ensure fire safety for office workers, an officer will be responsible for overseeing maintenance schedules for all the individual fire safety tools located within and around your office space.

Even though your office fire safety officer is responsible for managing the maintenance schedules of all your fire safety equipment, keeping these ESMs safe and in good working order is a responsibility for all employees. If you have reason to believe that any of your office’s fire safety equipment has become faulty or is in need of inspection prior to its next scheduled maintenance appointment, then you’re advised to communicate your concerns to your workplace fire safety officer. Doing so will ensure that your fire safety officer promptly contacts your workplace’s fire protection service providers to test any office fire safety equipment that is of concern.
